Comical and delightful . . . light and fun.
Stephanie Petit, Spokane Spokesman-Review
Jan Bach had a good time distorting the essence of the sounds of a calliope, an old recording of a dance tune, a military neophyte and a pinwheel. The music is pure fun but poses enormous technical challenges . . .
Joan Reinthaler, Washington Post
Jan Bach is a master at writing for wind and brass instruments, perhaps the finest now at work in this area. Bach's "Contraptions" is an amusing set of miniatures with a witty satirical edge. At times one is convinced there are far more than two instruments at work, so continuous is the flow of musical material between the two players.
Elliott S. Hurwitt, Fanfare
The highlight of the evening was Jan Bach's "Four Two-Bit Contraptions." these were gloriously goofy duets for horn and flute that portrayed a closet jazzer of an ROTC lieutenant, a wonderfully out of tune and sync calliope of elephantine disgrace, an old gramophone complete with needle skips and a breathless pinwheel.
Hugh Fraser, The Hamilton Spectator, Canada
