An "opera for instrumentalists" after the Keats poem,
for antiphonal wind ensemble (30:00)

The score to the opera was ingeniously thought out by Bach to tell the story through the use of instruments only. Five conductors were demanded to handle all the various sections of the ensemble. Especially impressive was the orchestration which breathed life into the groups, making each melt into one personality instead of clusters of musicians.

The rhythmic complexity typical to the Renaissance is maintained, and both exposed sections and thick polyphonic textures are contained. While the dances are freely set, the essence of Praetorius' music is most assuredly present. Fine piece for special programming and teaching late sixteenth century approaches to counterpoint.
