These duets have been excerpted from PEOPLE OF NOTE, a twenty-nine-movement work of duets, quartets, and ensembles for solo singers, orchestra, and optional chorus by Jan Bach. Because the work performed in its entirety would run well over an hour and a half, Dr. Bach has chosen this unique method of distributing the work's duets to those singers and instrumentalists who might be interested in performing them.

Each duet includes an instrumental performer (woodwind, brass, timpani, harp, or piano) and a singer (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass) who sings the Laurence McKinney poem which describes, in humorous terms, the

These duets are FULLY COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS for which permission has been granted specifically by Penguin Paperbacks for the purpose of distributing them electronically throughout the world. instrument being played. The instrumental part for each duet is transposed to the instrument's own key (for instance, the clarinet is written a major second higher than it sounds) so that both performers can read from copies of the same part, provided, of course, the singer makes the necessary adjustments in the instrumental parts when taking his or her entrance pitches from non-concert instruments.
